What Are Some Ways to Prevent a Clogged Toilet?

Toilet clogs are never fun. In fact, they’re known to cause a huge mess and can damage flooring, as well as pipes. The best way to deal with a toilet clog is to never let one happen in the first place. Let’s look at ways you can prevent a clogged toilet from occurring.

Only Flush the Flushable

Only three things should ever go down the toilet drain: water, toilet paper, and human waste. Never try to flush anything else down the toilet, such as, but not limited to:

  • Facial tissue
  • Makeup wipes
  • Paper towels
  • Hair
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Grease
  • Medication
  • Diapers
  • Toys

Even if a product is labeled flushable, don’t do it. You’re just asking for trouble (and a major headache).

Keep Small Items Away from the Toilets

It’s not uncommon to have shelves above or near the toilet, perfect for storing soaps, toilet paper, combs, and other bathroom items. Having too many items close to the toilet can be a recipe for disaster because they can easily get knocked into the drain and cause a clog.

The safest option is to keep the area around the toilet clear of small items at all times. If your bathroom is small and you can’t find anywhere else to store smaller items, at least keep them item inside larger containers so the chances of them getting flushed are minimal.

Deal with Slow Drains Before They Get Clogged

A slow drain usually means a clog is forming somewhere in the system. Don’t wait for it to become clogged before taking action. If possible, use a toilet plunger to clear the developing clog. If that doesn’t work, you should call us and a plumber can come over to clear the toilet drain. If you wait, you may be faced with cleaning up the mess of an overflowing toilet.
